Lida Africa was privileged to participate in the 2019 United Nations Evaluation Group (UNEG) Evaluation Week with a theme “Evaluating in the SDG era”. Hosted by United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) and United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the United Nations Evaluation Group (UNEG) Evaluation Week 2019 was held from 13-17 May 2019 at United Nations Office in Nairobi, Kenya.

The UNEG Evaluation Week 2019 opened with five (5) one-day Professional Development Seminar (PDS) on Monday 13 May 2019, followed by Evaluation Practice Exchange (EPE), Tuesday 14 – Wednesday 15 May 2019 and the Annual General Meeting, Thursday 16 May – Friday 17 May 2019.

Lida Africa conducted a Professional Development Seminar (PDS) on the use of Qualitative Data Analysis Software in Evaluations with a special focus on NVIVO Software. The PDS attracted 20 UNEG delegates from 11 UN agencies. More females (14) than males (6) attended. Various countries were represented at this seminar as indicated in the figure.

The workshop employed a participatory – hands on approach. Lida Africa provided NVIVO trial version software, qualitative datasets and other materials to delegates. The session was delivered through a step by step process for using NVIVO software for conducting qualitative data analysis. The session started with a discussion about the fundamentals of qualitative data, then the installation of NVIVO, followed by the basics of the software, coding, classification and analysis and visualization. Participants with great skills on conducting qualitative data analysis shared lessons with others which enriched the seminar.

Evaluation Data Management, Analysis and Visualization Using Advanced Microsoft Excel

Evaluation statistics are an imperative component in everything pertaining life, useful in development-policy making processes of organizations but also in evaluating the eco-system. However, a substantial gap still exists between the demand for the evaluation statistics and the ability of most organizations to routinely provide it through credible evaluations using various methodologies like RCTs, Propensity score matching etc. The use of such statistics by various populations especially the local community or even local governments in Africa is still a challenge. Evaluators are hence faced with a challenge of breaking down such superior results into simplified visuals. Microsoft Excel has powerful tools that can enable evaluators to set up simplified data management, analysis and visualization systems to enable users to make timely decisions, taking corrective actions and become result based.

This workshop is ideal for managers and researchers from development organizations, foundations, governments and non-governmental organizations, as well as M&E professionals and students. It’s for people wanting to use more complex functions within Excel to automate and hence simplify data analysis, visualization and interpretation with in their interventions.

Specifically, the workshop will:

  1. Improve participants’ knowledge & understanding of Evaluation data
  2. Improve participants’ practical skills of Data Management, Analysis and Visualization through use of advanced functions in Ms excel
  3. Enable participants share knowledge and experiences in evaluation data management using MS ExcelThe training will cover three sessions;

Session 1 – Evaluation Data analysis and interpretation using PIVOT tables
    • Understanding Evaluation Data
    • Introduction to Pivot tables
    • Conducting Univariate analysis
    • Conducting Bivariate analysis
    • Multivariate analysis
    • Updating & formatting Pivot Tables

Session 2 – Evaluation Data Visualization Using Excel
    • Introduction to data visualization
    • Elements of a good Excel Visual
    • Creating visuals on comparison data
    • Developing visuals on composition data
    • Creating visuals on distribution data
    • How to visualize data on relationships

Session 3: Linking & Automating Data analysis for simplified Evaluation data analysis
    • Introduction to linking sheets in same or different workbooks
    • Using COUNT, COUNTIF & COUNTIFS function
    • Using the SUMIF and SUMIFS functions
    • Using the AVERAGEIF and AVERAGEIFS functions
    • Creating automated graphs

This 1 day hands-on workshop will be facilitated by Ronald and Victor from Lida Africa. Lida Africa has over 6 years of experience in statistical software and M&E trainings. We have empowered over 600 professionals through our routine executive training sessions and tailor made on-site trainings. Recently Ronald and Victor held a similar Executive Workshop at the 8th AfrEA International Conference where over 65 participants from 23 countries attended. While in October 2017, The South Africa Monitoring and Evaluation Association invited Victor to provide a similar workshop to over 32 delegates at the 6th SAMEA Biennial Conference.

Participants are required to have access to computers installed with Microsoft office version 2010/2013/2016 (2016 is preferred). Lida Africa will provide training datasets & online materials at no cost. A Lida Africa Excel Manual will be provided at a cost.

Lida Africa trains over 65 delegates at the 8th AfrEA International Conference, 29th-March 2017

The AfrEA International Conference happens every 2 years and is organised by the Africa Evaluation Association. This year 2017, 8th AfrEA International Conference  was held in Kampala Uganda at Munyonyo Common Wealth Resort and aimed at promoting exchange between researchers, academia, emerging evaluators and practitioners on demand and supply of credible evaluative evidence in support of the SDGs in Africa. It also built delegates’ capacity to design, manage and use evaluations to help Governments achieve their national and international development agendas, particularly around the SDGs and the Africa2063 Agenda.

In line with the above objectives, Lida Africa submitted a comprehensive Workshop Paper that was warmly accepted entitled “Strengthening M&E Data Management and Analysis capacity Using Microsoft Excel” under the “Made in Africa Evaluation Strand”

On Wednesday, 29th March 2017, Lida Africa  was honored to conduct this half day executive workshop at the 8th Africa Evaluation International Conference  in Kampala, Uganda. This workshop aimed at strengthening the data management and analysis capacity of delegates in regards to the use of M&E data. The training focused on practical analysis of data using PIVOT tables, charts and using advanced functions like SUMIFS, AVERAGEIFS & COUNTIFS for analysis. The workshop attracted 65 participants from 23 countries with nearly 70% coming from Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Tanzania & Nigeria. Other countries represented included; Algeria, Botswana, Burundi, Canada, Ghana, India, Italy, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan & United States of America. More male (62%) than female (38%) delegates were reached.

Participants with Trainers during & after the Workshop in Regal Conference Hall, Speke Resort, Munyonyo

Sponsored by the Youth Power Learning, Lida Africa Trainers, Victor Kiwujja & Ronald Waiswa employed a participatory – hands on approach to equip delegates with practical evaluation data analysis skills  using a dataset provided by Lida Africa

At the end of the training, delegates rated the training & provided feedback for improvement. Results indicated that  100% of delegates rated the workshop as either “Excellent (51%) or Good (49%)”.  Delegates noted “ Lida Africa had Great Facilitators, The training was Very relevant & applicable in their work”. Furthermore, they noted that four (4) hours was not enough time and advised AfrEA & Lida Africa to provide more time to this workshop in the next 2019 conference in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast).

Special thanks go to King Jesus Christ – The AUTHOR & Finisher of our Faith, to AfrEA for the opportunity, to YOUTH POWER LEARNING for the Bursary, to AfrEA delegates for participation & to LIDA AFRICA team for the great work.
